This week, the
Cook County Health & Hospitals System is providing outplacement services to about 1,000 employees who recently learned they would lose their
jobs after the holidays. Outplacement assistance will be available at
Stroger Hospital,
Provident Hospital and
Oak Forest Hospital.
"We want to make sure that we do everything we can to make sure that the effected
employees will be better prepared to conduct a job search in this very difficult market," William Foley, CEO of the Cook County Health & Hospitals System, told the
Chicago Current.
Employees who attend the events will be given the opportunity to meet with representatives from the
President's Office of Employment Training, the
Mayor's Office of Workforce Development, the Member Assistance Program, the
Illinois Department of Employment Security, the Cook County Pension Board,
Deferred Compensation Plan and the County Employee Assistance Program.
"
Representatives will provide displaced employees with benefits information that is available to them upon their departure," Niesha Denagall, with the HR department at the Cook County Health & Hospitals System, said. "Employees will also learn about possible job training programs in the area."
Although the healthcare industry is often considered to be one of the few that are recession-proof, and the industry has seen a monthly increase in employment in the Chicago area, the industry has lost jobs when compared to last year.
The Chicago-Naperville-Joliet area's education and health services industry employed 527,700 workers during October, according to the U.S. Department of Labor
Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is up from 518,400 workers during September, but a .2 percent decrease from last year.
